Bonaire is a vert small island, we saw most everything in about 5 leisurely hours. Of course if you wanted to swim or snorkel, or stop for food it would be a bit longer. Only hang-up is that there may not be any taxis waiting at the airport when you return the car, so getting back to the port or downtown if you are on a day trip for a cruise could be a bit challenging. Recommend making arrangements with the taxi stand in front of the port in advance so you can call them directly.

Like most islands, streets are narrow and parking can be difficult in popular areas. That said, there are lots and spots available, but one may have to walk a block or two to a given destination. Also, the round-abouts work great, one just needs to pay attention. Drivers here do take advantage of a gap in traffic and stop signs are rare. Be courteous and cognizant and everyone should get along. Goats, chickens, donkeys and iguanas roam freely away from urban areas, so one should be alert at all times. In addition, there are many one-lane “highways”, so that slowing and passing with right side tires on the shoulder is normal. The frequent pull-outs are also useful when encroaching flora impedes pulling over for passing. Timing oncoming traffic can prevent having anyone be in a position to have to reverse to allow for passing. There are a lot of bikes, scooters and golf carts, so best to leave one’s impatience at home. Relax and enjoy, you are on island time.
